Welcome to the 2020 Winter Session I
Elementary School Aged Students:
Pre-Vet Techs; Little Vet Techs; Ready, Vet Go
Students will spend five weeks exploring many aspects of veterinary medicine in a hands-on, interactive way. All lessons will be taught at an age-appropriate level. Students should prepare for many special visitors AND unique activities!
This session will run from the week of January 6th through the week of February 3rd and is perfect for all students, Pre-K through 12th grade, who love animals, science and learning.
Session topic schedule:
Week 1: Teddy Bear Clinic
Who doesn’t like playing Doctor? Each student will bring their own teddy bear as we learn how to give a physical exam and take care of common ailments. Children will learn bandaging as well as well as use some common veterinary tools.
Week 2: Animal Behavior: Anti-Bullying Workshop
Children can learn important life-lessons by studying animal behavior. Through real-life demonstrations of non-human animal behavior, children will come to the agreement that bullying is unacceptable and that true leadership comes with demonstrating kindness, patience, empathy, and understanding.
Week 3: Babies Owl Pellet Dissection
Students will learn about the digestive system of an owl and other birds of prey through their pellets. No animals were harmed for this dissection lesson.
Week 4: Pre-Vet Techs, Little Vet Techs, Ready Vet Go: Basics for all Living Things
All living things require certain basic needs for survival and more importantly, good health. Students will learn and discuss these basics and design healthy habitats for different species using these guidelines.
Week 4: Horses 101
It takes more than just a love of horses to practice equine medicine! In this class students will learn medical concerns and practices, handling and safety, care and husbandry!
Week 5: Wildlife Encounter
What should you do if you find a baby bunny all alone? What’s the best thing to do if you come across a bird with a broken wing? Students will learn how to conduct themselves in the presence of wild animals. Sick, injured, and healthy animals all react differently. Students will explore what they can do to keep wildlife safe.
