Vets in Training Program at West Deptford Middle School
Available to Grades 5/6 and 7/8
Program sessions:
All Creatures Great and Small
All hands on deck! This round floor discussion will allow the children to investigate, explore, and discover the individual animals of the learning center. There will be a few animal surprises!
Composting 101 Experience and observe the compost life cycle! Students will learn the importance of composting in today’s world and how it can help the animals around us.
Owl Pellet Dissection
The scoop on poop—a discussion on poop and why it’s important! Students will end the fun and explore a dissection activity of Owl Pellets.
Sterile Procedure
Keeping things sterile avoids life threatening problems. Students will learn about sterility, participate in a lab on surgical prep and practice our sterility in a mock procedure.
Animal Nutrition
Eating is fun! Join us as we discuss the importance of nutrition and how to make nutritious and easy treats for our companion animals.
Wellness Exams:
What does an annual exam look like?! We will learn the basic tools and rules to doing a great physical exam. You will leave this class wanting to hear the heartbeat of all animals, guaranteed!
Where Do I Hurt?: Medical Investigation Lab
Put on your lab coats! This case based learning experience will allow VIT students to become the veterinarians. Through medical investigation work, the students will be challenged to find out where an animal hurts.
Beginner Suturing Techniques
Veterinarians use many different kinds of suturing techniques when they close incisions during surgery. In this lab students will learn 4-5 different suture patterns.
